This was apparently an internal video that was made by Nick Foster, then the head of the research and development branch of google, google X in 2016. After it was “ leaked”, it rightfully received a lot of criticism due to its rather overt themes of eugenics and social engineering . The responses from the design team claimed that it was meant to be provocative and shouldn’t be taken as evidence that anything like that was actually being developed. It was framed as a thought- experiment, but it does seem to me to be playing out. My first viewing of this piece I allowed myself to be creeped out and somewhat stunned by the dystopian and tyrannical overtones. The second time I watched it I looked at the footage of various other humans and really committed myself to seeing them each through an imago dei lens rather than as shiftable data points. Personally, I want to practice active resistance to whatever this technocratic collectivist nudging is. ...
